Blackhawk Manor and Wauona Trails Manor were created in 1972 by a man named L. Norman Schweiss. At that time, Norm was the owner of the largest mobile home dealership in Wisconsin. Norm's Mobile Homes started with a small dealership on East Washington Avenue in Madison in 1953, and over time had grown to 7 sales lots throughout the state. During that time, Norm and his wife Darlene, continuously worked on improving their product and service to ensure that their customers always stayed happy after the sale. Norm ran the business based on honesty, integrity, and the idea of "We'll trade for anything!" Over the years, Norm has always gone the extra mile for his residents. By including continued education into his normal routine, Norm has acquired the title of "ACM", which stands for Accredited Community Manager. While there are only a handful of these managers in the state, it helps him stay in touch with our ever changing industry.
As time went on, Norm saw an opportunity to take his business one step further. The majority of the mobile home communities in the Dane, Sauk, and Columbia County areas were not very appealing to his sales customers. That was when he decided to build Blackhawk Manor. Baraboo is a charming area with a quaint downtown square, a nice city pool within walking distance of the community, and many opportunities for employment. It seemed to be a perfect choice for Norm to build his community. He set out to build a mobile home park that was close to downtown with large lots, off street parking, and playgrounds for the kids. He also wanted to make sure his community was one of the cleanest around, and keep the rents as low as possible. This holds true even to today. Blackhawk Manor turned out to be such a success, Norm and Darlene decided to build another community in Portage, WI called Wauona Trails Manor.
As time has passed, Norm is still very involved in the day-to-day workings of the communities. Since they were first built, there have been many changes to the communities. Blackhawk Manor started out as a 53 space park and with the addition of the final 100 spaces added in 1993, it has now grown to a 316 space community. One of the biggest changes over the years is the size of the homes. When the parks were built, the typical mobile home width was 12 feet. However, Norm had the foresight to make the lots larger than most other mobile home communities. As a result of their forward thinking, even the oldest sections of Blackhawk Manor and Wauona Trails Manor can accommodate today's larger manufactured homes.
